Best Multi-Gig Routers

On a plan faster than 1 Gbps, a gigabit WAN port is the bottleneck. These all have at least one 2.5G port.

Why multi-gig ports matter

Once your internet plan or home network passes 1 Gbps, the classic gigabit port becomes the bottleneck. Every router here has at least one 2.5 Gbps or faster port.

Check where the fast ports are. A router with a 2.5 Gbps WAN but only gigabit LAN ports passes fast internet to Wi-Fi, but not to a wired PC. For fiber plans, see routers for fiber internet.

Frequently asked questions

What is a multi-gig port?

An Ethernet port faster than 1 Gbps, usually 2.5, 5 or 10 Gbps. Most work with normal Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable over home distances.

Do I need multi-gig if my plan is 1 Gbps?

Not for the internet connection. A multi-gig LAN port still helps for wired backhaul in a mesh system or for a fast NAS.

Is a 2.5 Gbps port enough?

For plans up to 2 Gbps, yes. For 5 Gbps or faster plans, look for 10 Gbps.
