Covering a large home

Every unit on this page claims at least 2,500 sq ft of coverage. That’s the maker’s open-space figure, so use it to compare models, not to measure your home.

For multi-story homes, a single router on the ground floor rarely reaches the top floor well. A mesh kit with a unit on each floor fixes that, ideally with wired backhaul if you have Ethernet runs.

Frequently asked questions

Router or mesh for a large house?

Above roughly 3,000 sq ft, or with two or more floors, mesh is the safer choice. One strong router in the middle of the home can work for open, single-level layouts.

How much coverage do I need?

Add up your floor area and add about a third for walls, floors and corners the signal must reach. Coverage claims are measured in open space.

Where should the router go?

Central, high and in the open: not in a cabinet, a basement corner or behind the TV. Placement often matters as much as the model.
