Best Tri-Band Routers

A third band spreads busy devices across more airtime, and on mesh kits it can carry the link between units.

When a tri-band router helps

A third band gives a router more room to work. In a single router it spreads devices out; in a mesh system it usually becomes a private link between units, so your devices don’t share bandwidth with that traffic.

Check which third band you get. A second 5 GHz band works with older devices, while a 6 GHz band brings Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 speeds to newer ones but has shorter range.

Compare with dual-band routers if you have a smaller home.

Frequently asked questions

What does tri-band mean?

The router has three radios, usually 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and either a second 5 GHz or a 6 GHz band. More radios spread devices across more airtime.

Is tri-band better than dual-band?

For busy homes with many devices, and for mesh systems linking units wirelessly, yes. For a small apartment with a handful of devices, dual-band is enough.

What about quad-band?

Quad-band adds a fourth radio, typically a second 5 GHz or 6 GHz band. It is mostly found on gaming flagships and top mesh kits.
