Running a VPN on your router

Every router here supports WireGuard, the modern VPN protocol, as a server, a client or both. A router-level VPN covers devices that can’t run VPN apps: smart TVs, consoles and streaming sticks.

Check whether you need a server (to reach home from outside) or a client (to route home traffic through a VPN provider). For speed, the processor matters most.

Frequently asked questions

What does a VPN router do?

It runs the VPN for the whole network. As a client, it sends every device through a VPN provider. As a server, it lets you connect back home from anywhere.

Will a VPN slow my internet?

Somewhat. Encryption takes processing power, so a router's VPN speed is often well below its normal speed. WireGuard is much faster than OpenVPN on the same hardware.

Can I use my VPN provider on these routers?

Most VPN providers offer WireGuard or OpenVPN config files that these routers accept. Some routers also have built-in support for specific providers.
