What a fiber router needs

Fiber plans now run from 1 Gbps to 8 Gbps, and the router is often what holds them back. Every router here has a 2.5 Gbps or faster port and supports ISP VLAN tagging, which some fiber providers need for the connection to work.

Match the WAN port to your plan, then check you have a matching LAN port or two for a desktop, console or NAS. For plans above 2 Gbps, look at 10G routers or routers with SFP ports.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my own router with fiber?

Usually, yes. Connect it to the fiber box (ONT) or put the provider's gateway in bridge or pass-through mode. Some providers need VLAN tagging, which every router here supports.

What WAN port speed do I need?

At least the speed of your plan. A 1 Gbps port caps a 2 Gbps or 5 Gbps plan, so multi-gig plans need a 2.5 Gbps, 5 Gbps or 10 Gbps port.

Will Wi-Fi reach my fiber speed?

Close to the router on Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7, a single device can pass 1 Gbps. To use a multi-gig plan fully, connect your fastest devices with Ethernet.
