Why travel with a router

A travel router turns any connection into your own network: one sign-in, one password, and every laptop, phone and streaming stick connects as if at home.

The specs that matter here are VPN support (WireGuard is fastest), USB-C power so a power bank or laptop can run it, and tethering for using your phone as the internet source. Raw Wi-Fi speed matters less than in a home router.

Frequently asked questions

What is a travel router?

A pocket-sized router that connects to hotel, campsite or airport Wi-Fi (or a wired port, or your phone) and creates your own private network for all your devices.

Why not just use hotel Wi-Fi?

Your devices sign in once to your own network, stay behind its firewall, and can all go through one VPN. Many hotels also limit how many devices can connect.

Can a travel router get through a hotel login page?

Yes. Most have a captive-portal mode: you sign in once from your phone and every device behind the router gets online.
