Who needs a 10G router?

A 10 Gbps port future-proofs a router for the fastest fiber plans and lets a NAS or desktop move files at full speed.

Look at how many 10G ports there are and whether one is WAN-only. With a single 10G port used for the internet, everything else is limited to the slower LAN ports. Some routers add SFP+ ports as well.

Frequently asked questions

Who needs a 10 gig router?

Anyone on a 5 Gbps or faster fiber plan, and homelab users with a 10G NAS or switch. For a 1 or 2 Gbps plan, 2.5G is enough.

What cable does 10G need?

Cat 6a for full runs. Cat 6 handles 10 Gbps over shorter distances, and Cat 5e is reliable only at 2.5 or 5 Gbps.

Copper 10G or SFP+?

Copper (RJ45) uses normal network cable. SFP+ takes a fiber module or direct-attach cable, and runs cooler and over longer distances.
